Am I Eligible For The GST/HST Rebate On Rental Property?

If you’re a Canadian resident and landlord, you may qualify for the new residential rental property rebate if:
  • You have purchased a newly constructed house from a builder
  • You have substantially renovated a residential rental property
  • You have converted an existing non-rental property into a rental property with substantial renovations
  • You have built or hired someone else to build a new residential rental property
  • You have made a major addition to your residential rental property
Make sure you have the necessary information so the documents can be completed accurately and in full. Typically, the Canada Revenue Agency will process a rebate in four to eight weeks unless subjected to an audit. And yes, multi-units and co-ops qualify for the NRRP rebate as well, but the process is much more complex so it’s best to have a team of dedicated and experienced professionals to assist you. You also have two years from the closing date to apply for the NRRP Rebate.

What Qualifies As A Substantial Renovation?

According to the CRA, a substantial renovation is when you’ve had to remove and replace 90% or more of your home or residential property’s interior. If you’ve added an addition to your home or new residential rental property, the addition must be twice the size of the rest of the liveable spaces in the existing home/residential rental building.

How Much Can I Get Back For The GST/HST NRRP Rebate?

While we won’t guarantee a specific amount, you may be eligible to receive a maximum of $30,000 back from the Government of Canada. If you’d like to know precisely what you’re entitled to, use our reliable rebate calculator! You’ll need to provide the province your property is located in, the total you’ve spent on goods and services (remember to keep all of your receipts for us), and a fair market value of the property after renovations have been completed.
